Bite Force and Influential Factors on Bite Force Measurements: A Literature Review

Abstract: Maximum voluntary bite force is an indicator of the functional state of the masticatory system and the level of maximum bite force results from the combined action of the jaw elevator muscles modified by jaw biomechanics and reflex mechanisms. The measurement of bite force can provide useful data for the evaluation of jaw muscle function and activity. It is also an adjunctive value in assessing the performance of dentures. Technological advances in signal detection and processing have improved the quality of t… Show more

“…Maximum bite force (MBF), which is defined as a functional force occurring during maximal clenching, reflects the biomechanical properties of the masticatory system . Maximum bite force is an objective measure of oral function and is demonstrated to be a key determinant of masticatory performance along with the number of occluding pairs of teeth .…”

“…According to the literature, the registered values of maximum bite force vary among different individuals that have been studied (2)(3)(4). This fact can be explained by various interrelated factors that influence or condition the measurement of the bite force.…”

“…A wide range of devices have been used to measure bite force (2,8): bite fork, the strain gauge transducers, the gnathodynamometer, the foil transducers, the pressurised rubber tube, the pressuresensitive sheet and the force-sensing resistors.
