Bit Error Rate Performance in Power Line Communication Channels with Impulsive Noise

Abstract: Abstract-The performance of Power Line Communication (PLC) degrades due to the presence of different types of noise interferences generated by electrical appliances. This paper investigates the bit-error rate (BER) performance of a higherorder 64-QAM constellation with orthogonal frequency multiplexing modulation (OFDM) in presence of impulsive noise modelled as Middleton Class A over a multipath PLC. It is observed that BER for the impulsive noise is higher than the background noise. The BER further deteriora… Show more

“…Therefore, although PLC provides a convenient and inexpensive manner for signal transmission, which has attracted increasing attention, however, in practical applications, PLC will face several major challenges caused by the unfavorable conditions of power lines mentioned above, mainly including frequency-selective fading 2,3 and impulsive interference. [4][5][6] Focusing on these challenges, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is proven as an efficient method to resolve such problems multipath propagation and frequency selective fading in PLC. 7,8 But the impulsive noise over the PLC channel which is the most dominant one requires channel coding technology to address it.…”

“…In [ 22 , 23 ], authors analyzed security vulnerabilities, attacks, and countermeasures for AMI applications. In [ 24 , 25 ], bit error rate performances (BER) were quantified for a PLC channel using OFDM modulation and a hamming code in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and impulsive noise. However, in this paper, the authors designed an AMI-NAN solution that selected an appropriate link, RF, or PLC to guarantee an uninterrupted communication between smart meters and data concentrators.…”
