Abstract:Bisphosphonates are potent inhibitors of bone resorption, which prevent bone loss, improve bone strength and decrease the risk of fractures. This article reviews the results of recent studies on the efficacy and safety of bisphosphonates for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Results of randomized trials using novel dosing regimens of bisphosphonates are discussed. Outcomes include bone mineral density, bone turnover markers fractures adverse events.
