Bisphenol A and indicators of obesity, glucose metabolism/type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease: A systematic review of epidemiologic research

Abstract: Epidemiological study design issues severely limit our understanding of health effects associated with BPA exposure. Considering the methodological limitations of the existing body of epidemiology literature, assertions about a causal link between BPA and obesity, DM, or CVD are unsubstantiated.

“…First, since fasting status (≥ 10 or < 10 hours) and time of urine collection (morning, afternoon, or evening) may be associated with urinary BPA levels, 26,27 we assessed potential confounding by these variables. Second, we restricted our models to respondents aged 18 to 64 years, as standard BMI and waist circumference classifications may not be applicable to elderly (Table 4), with slightly stronger associations in females (p for interaction > .05; data not shown).…”

“…dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls) to those that are metabolized and/or eliminated within hours or days. Short-lived chemicals present unique challenges for exposure assessment and for study design and interpretation LaKind et al 2014b). TCS is an important short-lived chemical because of widespread human exposure and public concern surrounding its use (http:// www.nytimes.com/2013/12/17/health/fda-to-require-proofthat-antibacterial-soaps-are-safe.html).…”

“…BPA intake is higher and more dangerous in infants and children, and it can lead to the onset of several diseases, such as cancer, endometriosis, birth defects, and developmental and neuronal disorders (Rochester 2013, Delclos et al 2014. BPA intake has also been associated with obesity and metabolic disorders (Rochester 2013, Lakind et al 2014, specifically in children (Trasande et al 2012, Nicolucci et al 2013.…”
