Bismuth Film Anodic Stripping Voltammetry for the Determination of Lead in Kerosene: A Metrological Study

Abstract: Anodic stripping voltammetry and bismuth film electrode (BFE) were used to develop a method for the determination of lead in a complex sample (kerosene) prepared as a stable microemulsion. The method allowed the sensitive determination of lead with a quantification limit, in the sample, of 1.4 Â 10 À7 mol L À1 employing a 240 s accumulation time. Fortified sample analysis enabled the average analyte recovery around 99% which was statistically similar to the one achieved using a reference method (atomic absorpt… Show more

“…Moreover, BiFEs present some advantages over mercury film electrodes: Bi is by far less toxic than Hg and, therefore, BiFEs are environmental‐friendly electrodes, BiFEs are less susceptive to interferences from dissolved oxygen than mercury electrodes 9, 44 and finally BiFEs can be used in both acidic or strongly alkaline media 47, making them more versatile than mercury film electrodes. Therefore, BiFEs are the best alternative to mercury for heavy metals determination by ASV, which is demonstrated by the large number of works using BiFEs for metal ions determination 4, 5, 1014, 22, 34.…”

“…All these positive aspects are combined with a relatively inexpensive instrumentation and low operator training requirements. Thus, the simplicity and great analytical performance of ASV have allowed its successful use to quantify metal ions in different kinds of samples, such as: water 214, food 15 and soil samples 16; fruit juices 17; alcoholic beverages 18–20; biodiesel 21, 22; ethanol fuel 2331 and petroleum‐based fuels, such as gasoline 32, 33 and kerosene 34.…”

“…Dentre esses métodos pode-se destacar a espectrometria de absorção atômica em forno de grafite, [6][7][8] espectrometria de massas com plasma indutivamente acoplado (ICP-MS) e a voltametria. [9][10][11][12][13][14] As demais técnicas instrumentais necessitam de alguma etapa prévia de pré-concentração.…”

“…Lead, for example, is concentrated in the heavy fraction and waste during the processing of crude oil, however, their presence has been detected in various petroleum fractions. Lead is also used as anti‐knock additive in jet fuel (kerosene and gasoline), although there are worldwide restrictions on their use in fuels 5.…”
