Bismuth coordination networks containing deferiprone: synthesis, characterisation, stability and antibacterial activity

Abstract: A series of bismuth-dicarboxylate-deferiprone coordination networks have been prepared and structurally characterised. The new compounds have been demonstrated to release the iron overload drug deferiprone on treatment with PBS and have also been shown to have antibacterial activity against H. pylori.

“…In the literature, Bi V –TMC complexes are more prevalent;, however, only a single study utilizing this ligand scaffold with bismuth(III) exists. [10b] Moreover, certain considerations must first be regarded in comparing these two classes of compounds, not least of which is the alcohol solution and elevated temperatures needed to form the aforementioned organobismuth complexes; in contrast, aqueous conditions are employed in this study under ambient conditions.
