The photoelectron spectra 0' 7-14 have been measured. The first two ionization potentials (IP) of 7 correspond to x-or bitals, which are separated by only 0.3 eV. Through-space-and through-bond-coupling near y cancel each other. The assumption of the sequence IT+ > xin 7 is stronglysupported by the spectrum of 10. The fact that IPI (7) = IP2 (10) is compatible with a x-bonding and a-antibonding mixing of the exocyclic x-orbital of 10 with x+. The interactiqn between Walsh-i nd x-orbitals in 13 is nearly vanished, presumably because of the greater distance as comparec to 19. The homoconjugative ability of the cyclobutane ring has been studied. In all but one of the cases the effects are less distinct with the four-membered than with the three-membered rings, as judged by the two observables Ae = e(es) -e(ea) and ~( x ) .
Photoelectron Spectroscopic Investigation of the Intramolecular x,x-Interactions in endo-To give an explanatioi for the different photochemical behaviour of 4, 7, and 18, the excited states of 7 and 18 have been explored by means of a CNDO/2-CI-procedure.
