Bisexual Fertile Triploid Zebrafish (Danio rerio): a Rare Case

Abstract: Previous studies have suggested that artificially induced triploid zebrafish are exclusively male-biased. Owing to greatly inhibited gonadal development for the artificially induced triploid fish, they are regarded to be sterile in general. In this article, partially fertile bisexual triploid zebrafish are produced by suppressing extrusion of the second polar body by heat shock. Histological observation confirms that the early gonadal development of these triploid zebrafish is normal. Backcrossing and self-cro… Show more

“…Moreover, in general, the triploid fish were considered to be sterile (Krisfalusi et al, 2000;Piferrer et al, 2009;Qin et al, 2015;Huang et al, 2016;Hu et al, 2018), which not only ensures ecological security, but also brings the advantage of rapid growth (Lincoln and Scott, 1983;Guo et al, 2004;Yan et al, 2005;Liu et al, 2006Liu et al, , 2007Hu et al, 2012). Interestingly, there are also some fertile fish in triploids (Kavumpurath and Pandian, 1990;Zhang and Arai, 1999b;Xiao et al, 2011;Peng et al, 2020). In this study, the triploid crucian carp has been used as experimental materials and it was found that improved resistance to cadmium stress in triploid crucian carp can be the result of enhanced immune activity.…”

“…After being filtered through a 40 μm cell strainer, the cells were incubated with DAPI (Invitrogen) for about 15 min, then examined by flow cytometry (Sysmex-partec, Germany). As previously described, specific methods were carried out ( Peng et al, 2020 ).…”

“…All experiments in this study were performed in accordance with the guidelines of the Animal Ethical Review Committee of Hunan Normal University, Changsha, China. Sexually mature zebra sh were used for spawning following the method described by Peng et al (Peng et al, 2020). Embryos at different stages of zebra sh development were collected, including the cleavage stage (1.5 hours post-fertilization, 1.5 hpf), blastula stage (3 hpf), gastrula stage (6 hpf), somite stage (12 hpf), muscle effect stage (17 hpf), pharyngeal pouch period (24 hpf), and hatching period (72 hpf).…”
