Bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium picrate

Abstract: The asymmetric unit of the title salt, C4H12NO2 +·C6H2N3O7 −, contain two bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium cations and two picrate anions. An intramolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bond occurs in each cation. In the crystal, molecules are linked via O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which generate two R 2 1(6), an R 2 2(10) and an R 2 2(13) graph-set ring motifs. There are also a number of C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds present. The sum of these interactions leads to the formation a three-dimensional structure.

“…The view shown in Figure 3B, highlights the differences between conformations where the arms to right in I and III lie to opposite sides of the NC 2 plane, whereas that in II is approximately co-planar. The flexibility in conformation is highlighted by the observation that in NINZAN [42], for which two independent molecules comprise the asymmetric unit, one adopts motif II and the other motif III.…”

“…As mentioned above, there are literature precedents for the cation in 3 and an analysis of these reveals significant conformational flexibility in their molecular structures. Indeed, there are 10 other cations in structures that have three-dimensional coordinates and that do not suffer from disorder [38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45]. Key torsion angle data for these are collected in Table 2.…”
