Bis(1,10-phenanthroline-κ2N,N′)bis(thiocyanato-κN)cadmium

Abstract: The title compound, [Cd(NCS)2(C12H8N2)2], has been obtained from the decomposition reaction of dithiooxamide in a dimethylformamide solution containing 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and Cd(NO3)2·4H2O. Its crystal structure is formed by monuclear CdII entities in which the metal atom is sited on a twofold rotation axis. The CdII atom is six-coordinated in the form of a distorted octahedron by two chelating phenanthroline molecules and two thiocyanate anions coordinated through their N atoms. In the crystal, C… Show more

“…The presence of well‐defined peaks proves that these samples consisted of highly crystallized phases. Moreover, the positions of all of the ( hkl ) reflections match those calculated from the literature and are similar for all compounds . Thus, the Fe, Zn, Ni, and Cd compounds are isomorphous.…”

“…The comparison of these results to previous ones obtained for the same series with Co and Mn as the doping metals evidences that the magnitude of these effects depends strongly on the nature of the diluting metal. This is a direct consequence of the change of pressure in the lattice caused by chemical metal dilution, which affects the Gibbs free energy through a change of the molecular volume of reaction and results in the additional term pΔ V HL , . Thus, cadmium(II) and manganese(II) ions which, are larger than the iron(II) ion in its HS state, stabilize the HS state by exerting a ‘“negative” internal pressure, which leads to an important decrease of T 1/2 and an increase in the T (LIESST) value.…”
