Bird’s eye view of modern cytopathology: Report from the seventh international Molecular Cytopathology Meeting in Naples, Italy, 2018

Abstract: In the era of personalized medicine, cytopathology reports must be standardized to provide clinicians with clear information regarding relevant diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive tumor features. Since 2010, the international Molecular Cytopathology Meeting has been held annually in Naples, Italy, to disseminate recent breakthroughs and ongoing investigations in the field of modern cytopathology. In particular, the seventh annual meeting, which took place on November 26 through 27, 2018, focused on novel cy… Show more

“…These add to their traditional skills, consisting in the rapid on‐site evaluation (ROSE) of the aspirated material, the possibility of a direct patient physical and US examination . Moreover, when ROSE raises the possibility of an undetermined diagnosis, the cytopathologist should be ready to collect the material required by the molecular laboratory to refine the risk of malignancy (ROM) . This integrated approach provides all relevant factors to fully exploit the potential of thyroid cytopathology.…”

“…For the past several years, the International Molecular Cytopathology Meeting, held annually in Naples, Italy, has focused on providing a global perspective regarding the evolution of molecular pathology in the field of cytopathology with updates on cytological and molecular classifications and novel research. 2,3 In this issue of Cancer Cytopathology, we have presented a series of articles from the eighth meeting, held in December 2019, that focused on the similarities between and the unique practices of lung cancer molecular cytopathology in Europe and the United States, and offered a diverse and international perspective concerning the practice of molecular cytopathology.…”
