Bird ringing in Britain and Ireland in 2004

Abstract: This is the 68th annual report of the British Trust for Ornithology's Ringing Scheme, covering work carried out, and data received, in 2004.During the year, changes in bird survival in relation to winter weather were studied. In almost all cases, there was a greater influence of weather on firstyear than adult survival.A paper providing guidelines to help those setting up demographic monitoring schemes for waders was produced, with ringing as a key component.Concern about a reduction in reporting rates of ring… Show more

“…Replacing any of the time‐dependent parameters in the global model with constant ones resulted in significantly worse‐fitting models (ΔQAIC c > +20). However, a more parsimonious model (ΔQAIC c = −7.45) was achieved by constraining recovery probabilities to change linearly (on the logit scale), denoted by λ τ , which allowed for a potential systematic temporal decline in reporting rates over the period of the study (Clark et al. 2005).…”

“…The Solway Firth estuary in south‐west Scotland comprises one of the largest intertidal zones in Europe (Clark, ). Three conservation charities (The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds), and a statutory government body (Scottish Natural Heritage) manage a large contiguous area of wetland reserve on the northern shore of the estuary.…”
