Bipolar electrodissection tonsillectomy in children

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare bipolar electrodissection tonsillectomy with traditional cold dissection tonsillectomy in the pediatric population. Forty children with recurrent tonsillitis and/or obstructive symptoms were included in the study. The study population was randomly divided into two groups, and the two techniques were compared with regard to operative time, intraoperative and postoperative bleeding and postoperative pain. There were 23 children in the bipolar electrodissection tonsillecto… Show more

“…Postoperatively the patients experience more pain in electrocautery which is similar to the study by Kirazli et al 13 but differ from Kousha et al 14 where pain was more in classical dissection method and equal pain was observed in a study by Raut et al 9 In most of the studies 11,12 there was post operative hemorrhage in both the technique employed but in the present study there was no post operative hemorrhage observed probably because of a lesser sample size.…”

“…This was similar to other studies. [10][11][12] Thus, reduction in the operating time will make shorter duration of anesthesia which finally leads to the faster recovery of the patient. In our study, there was a significant reduction of blood loss also in bipolar electrodissection group which was similar to other studies.…”

“…In our study, there was a significant reduction of blood loss also in bipolar electrodissection group which was similar to other studies. [10][11][12][13] In children, reducing the blood loss is of utmost importance as increase volume of blood loss can lead a child to delayed recovery. Furthermore total circulating blood volume is less in children.…”

“…6 The most common indication is that of recurrent tonsillitis. 7 Although, pediatric tonsillectomy is tolerable, adult patients frequently experience moderate to severe odynophagia, bleeding, nausea, and airway complications, and the recovery period may even exceed 10 days. 8 Many strategies have been implemented to reduce the post-operative pain and morbidity, including pre-operative steroids, intra-operative local anesthetic injection, corticosteroids or nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medications.…”
