Biphasic Effects of Geranylgeraniol, Teprenone, and Phytol on the Growth of Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: We examined the antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus of three diterpenes, namely, geranylgeraniol, teprenone, and phytol, by using a broth dilution with shaking method to identify the effects of diterpenes with long aliphatic carbon chains. We also performed time-kill assays and measured the leakage of K ؉ ions from bacterial cells in response to these diterpenes. The diterpenes used inhibited the growth of S. aureus at concentrations of 0.15 g/ml, as determined by damage to the cell membrane… Show more

“…Similar result was also observed in the leaves of Lantana camara [13]. Phytol was observed to have antibacterial activities against Staphylococcous aureus by causing damage to cell membranes as a result there is a leakage of potassium ions from bacterial cells [14]. Phytol is a key acyclic diterpene alcohol that is a precursor for vitamins E and K1.…”

“…In addition to that, phytol derivatives have been found to act as immunostimulants by providing long-term memory induction and activating both innate and acquired immunity (Chowdhury & Ghosh 2012). The diterpene phytol has also been reported to possess antimicrobial potentials against Staphylococcus aureus and tuberculosis (Inoue et al 2005;Saikia et al 2010). Chang et al (2007) demonstrated that phytol exhibit neuroprotective effects on human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells when evaluated in vitro by using a simulated ischemia model.…”

“…We have studied the antibacterial activity of terpene alcohols with aliphatic carbon chain against S. aureus in detail [1][2][3] and found that farnesol, which is classified into sesquiterpene alcohol, showed significant antibacterial activity. 1 Moreover, farnesol damages bacterial cell membranes.…”
