Abstract:Effective enteral medication with sotalol in patients with short residual bowel is possible. Normal plasma concentrations can be achieved by administering doses according to the manufacturers' instructions. In case of severe short bowel syndrome, the measurements of plasma concentrations may be beneficial in supervising dose-adjustment.
“…Sotalol has been successfully utilized to manage atrial fibrillation in two patients with short bowel syndrome. 25 Drug doses were adjusted, above usual dosage guidelines, utilizing serum drug concentrations as a guide.…”
The input of specialist pharmacists is necessary in the management of these patients to ensure that appropriate drugs and formulations are prescribed in a timely manner to optimize absorption and resultant efficacy.

Although the results obtained are encouraging, the wide spectrum of effects and interactions of various drugs in malabsorption would suggest that therapy of any kind should be considered at individual level and monitored with blood assays.
