“…Therefore we supposed that the variation of the carbonate and organic carbon isotope was in lock-step during the P-Tr transition. This conclusion is supported by the data from other sections (Haas et al 2007;Payne et al 2004). …”

“…Understanding the pattern, mechanism and duration of this mass extinction are still ongoing subjects of debates (Fang 2004a, b;Jiang et al 2007b;Jin et al 2000;Kozur 1998; Wang and Cao 2004;Wignall and Hallam 1993a;Wu and Liu 1991;Xie et al 2005;Yin et al 2007a;Yin and Tong 1998). As a useful tool in reflecting the perturbation of environments, the carbon isotopes of this time interval, including organic and carbonate carbon isotope compositions, have been investigated in detail (Baud et al 1989;Cao et al 2002;Haas et al 2007; Korte et al 2004;Magaritz et al 1988Magaritz et al , 1992Payne et al 2004;Riccardi et al 2007;Schonlaub 1991;Xie et al 2007b;Xu and Yan 1993;Zhang et al 2006). Distinct negative excursion of carbon isotope compositions has been recognized worldwide at the P-Tr transition but both its excursion pattern and origin are still controversial, e.g., whether the excursion pattern was mono-episodic (Cao et al 2002;Jin et al 2000) or multiepisodic (Baud et al 1989;Haas et al 2007;Korte et al 2004;Payne et al 2004;Xie et al 2007a;Zhang et al 2006).…”

“…In Hungary, it is best recorded in the Bálvány North section (Haas et al 2007). As part of a multidisciplinary research project, we carried out a detailed provenance study and complex mineralogical investigation of the Bálvány North boundary section, where we also attempted to find tuff layers for possible radiometric age determinations.…”
