The midgut of insects is involved in digestion, osmoregulation and immunity. Although several defensive strategies are present in this organ, its organization and function may be disturbed by some insecticidal agents, including bioactive proteins like lectins and protease inhibitors (PIs) from plants. PIs interfere with digestion, leading to poor nutrient absorption and decreasing amino acid bioavailability. Intake of PIs can delay development, cause deformities and reduce fertility. Ingestion of PIs may lead to changes in the set of proteases secreted in the insect gut, but this response is often insufficient and results in aggravation of the malnutrition status. Lectins are proteins that are able to interact with glycoconjugates, including those linked to cell surfaces. Their effects on the midgut include disruption of the peritrophic matrix, brush border and secretory cell layer; induction of apoptosis and oxidative stress; interference with nutrient absorption and transport proteins; and damaging effects on symbionts. In addition, lectins can cross the intestinal barrier and reach the hemolymph. The establishment of resistant insect populations due to selective pressure resulting from massive use of a bioactive protein is an actual possibility, but this can be minimized by the multiple mode-of-action of these proteins, mainly the lectins.

Lectins are an important group of proteins which are spread in all kingdoms of life. Their most lighted characteristic is associated to their specific carbohydrate binding, although function has been not even identified. According to their carbohydrate specificity, several biological activities have been assessed, finding that lectins can be used as mitogenic agents, biomarkers, and cytotoxic and insecticide proteins. Lectins have been classified according to several features such as structure, source, and carbohydrate recognition. The Protein Research Group (PRG) has worked on Colombian seeds from the family of Fabaceae and Lamiaceae plants, isolating and characterizing their lectins, and found more than one lectin in some plants, indicating that according to its specificity, different lectins can have different biological activities. In the case of legume domain lectins, they have shown the biggest potential as insecticide or insectistatic agents due to the glycosylation pattern in insect midgut cells. This review attempts to identify the characteristics of plant legume lectin domains that determine their insecticidal and insectistatic activities.

a b s t r a c tDrinking water must be colorless, odorless and tasteless, and free of substances or micro-organisms that can cause disease. The process to obtain drinking water is purification, understood as the treatment to make water suitable for human consumption. Water purification is traditionally composed of a sequence of standard treatments including coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Some compounds named coagulants are used for coagulation-flocculation, which is the stage in which the suspended matter is removed and the water is clarified. Coagulants are usually synthetic, therefore represent a high cost and are difficult to gets in some areas, especially in developing countries. In addition, their use is being revised and restricted in different international standards, in order to control or prohibit its use because of the possible hazard effects that the remains of these products in treated water can cause to people. In contrast to synthetic coagulants, there are several natural compounds with coagulation properties which have some advantages such as easy availability and safety. At present, scientific community is paying more attention to natural coagulants as legal restrictions to synthetic ones are becoming more severe. This paper is a review of natural coagulants as an alternative to chemical coagulants, in which their potential application in the treatment of drinking water is analysed.
