Mushrooms could be used as a potential means of producing natural antioxidants and antimicrobials. To obtain fungal biomass in submerged culture is an easy and rapid method. For this reason, biomasses of Pleurotus species which grown on liquid media were used to prepare hot water extracts and their antioxidant and antibacterial properties were determined. The highest total phenolic content was determined in P. ostreatus extract (9.14 mg.g-1 dry weight of extract) whereas Pleurotus sajor-caju gave highest reading of total flavonoid content (3.10 mg.g-1 dry weight of extract). In the scavenging effect of DPPH radical test, P. sajor-caju showed the highest activity potential (69.67%). Mycelia extracts from Pleurotus species showed the antibacterial activity against the Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria (plant and human pathogens). Based on the results obtained, each extract from the five species Pleurotus (P. florida, P. citrinopileatus, P. sajor-caju, P. ostreatus and P. eryngii) showed antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and could be used in the formulation of nutraceuticals. Furthermore, the results presented in this work demonstrated that extracts were capable of inhibiting the in vitro growth of Helicobacter pylori.

Phytate-mineralizing bacteria (PMB) with plant growth-promoting activity can be considered as a potential biofertilizer for plant nutrition. PMB catalyzes the conversion of insoluble sugar phosphates, inositols, nucleic acids, phospholipids, nucleotides, phytate, and phytin into soluble forms that can be assimilated by plants. The present study aimed to isolate potential PMB from rhizospheric soils and to study their plant growth-promoting potential for the possible development of a potential phosphobacterium biofertilizer. For this purpose, 34 PMB isolates were isolated that showed potent phytate-mineralizing potential. These isolates were tested for their potential to solubilize tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and for various other plant growth-promoting activities. Significant differences were found among the isolates with regard to phytate mineralization and other plant growth-promoting characteristics. The bacterial isolates biochemically identified as Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Arthrobacter, and Burkholderia exhibited high/medium P solubilization, medium/high phytohormone production, and medium/low siderophore and ammonia production. Among all these isolates, isolate A14 (Burkholderia cenocepacia strain FDAARGOS_7) was the promising isolate with high TCP solubilization, medium phytate mineralization, high enzyme production, medium/high phytohormone production, and medium ammonia production. This strain also showed nitrogen fixation activity, zinc solubilizing potential, potassium solubilization, ACC deaminase production, and catalase production. Hence, it can be concluded that B. cenocepacia can be the potential candidate for biofertilizer development. Future studies are planned for exploring the role of PMB in biofertilizer formulations.

Use of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and rhizobia can have a positive effect on the growth of common bean. This study aimed at determining the mechanisms of action of native bacterial strains; and to determine their effect in enhancing growth of common bean. The strains were screened for their ability to solubilize insoluble inorganic phosphates and production of indole acetic acid in vitro. A greenhouse experiment was set up to evaluate the response of common bean to inoculation with selected bacterial strains. Six of the bacterial isolates tested showed a positive result for IAA production. Rhizobium pusense showed the greatest solubilization efficiency of 648 followed by Bacillus megaterium (322.3) and Rhizobium phaseoli (308.7). Inoculation of common bean with Rhizobia and PSB had a significant effect on the number of nodules per plant. The highest shoot biomass was observed when Rhizobium phaseoli was co-inoculated with P. polymyxa (4.3g plant-1) compared to the single Rhizobium phaseoli inoculation (1.14 g plant-1). The shoot tissue nitrogen and phosphorous concentration was increased as a results of co-inoculation up to 32.5% and 75.4% respectively. Therefore, tested bacterial strains have great potential in being formulated and used as biofertilizers that can be evaluated under varying field conditions.
