The commonly used removal processes for heavy metals from contaminated wastewater and cited in the literature are chemical precipitation, electrowinning, carbon adsorption, reverse osmosis, preconcentrations, biosorption, phytoremediation etc. Among these, biosorption is comparatively efficient, low cost, economical and reliable process. Actually, the reliability of the process is depending on the choice of local biosorbents and their abundant availability. The waste plant leaves of Kafal were collected from the region of Kumaun hills of India. The paper explains that the Kafal leaf powder is a good biosorbent for the removal of Cu (II) ions from contaminated wastewater under batch study. The experimental data indicate that high removal efficiency is obtained at optimized conditions viz. higher pH, lower metal ion concentrations, moderate higher temperatures and higher dosage of biosorbents. The biosorption efficiency is recorded 88.98% at pH 6, 48.99% at contact time 70 minutes and 40.01 % at a higher dosage of biosorbent. The regression value is indicating that the order for all used isotherms model is Langmuir> Freundlich > Temkin.

BIOSSORPTION OF Pb(II) BY URUCUM SHELLS (Bixa orellana) IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS: KINETIC, EQUILIBRIUMAND THERMODYNAMIC STUDY. This study describes the application of new and low cost biosorbent, shells of urucum (Bixa Orellana), for removal of lead ions (Pb(II)) from water solution. The urucum shells were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Batch adsorption experiments were performed in order to evaluate the effect of pH, agitation speed, adsorbent dosage, contact time, temperature, presence of interfering ions and matrix effect on the adsorption of process. The kinetics of biosorption followed pseudo-second-order model. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to describe the biosorption of Pb(II) by urucum shells. The Langmuir model showed better fit and the estimated biosorption capacity was 43.6 mg g -1. The negative Gibbs free energy, ΔG°, confirms the spontaneous nature and positive value of enthalpy, ΔH°, the endothermic character of the process. Furthermore, we also performed an evaluation of matrix and others ions effect on the biosorption process.Keywords: urucum shells, biosorption, low cost biosorbent and lead INTRODUÇÃOAtualmente, a poluição ambiental por metais potencialmente tóxi-cos é um dos principais problemas ambientais, principalmente devido ao crescimento tecnológico e industrial.1 A contaminação dos recursos hídricos com estes metais pode gerar problemas graves para o meio ambiente, para a saúde e para a qualidade de vida da população.2 O chumbo (Pb) possui ampla aplicação industrial e consequentemente, o torna um dos principais contaminantes no meio ambiente. Além disso, o Pb é um dos elementos químicos mais tóxicos para saúde humana segundo a Organização Mundial de Saúde.3 As indústrias automotivas, aeronáuticas, de revestimento e de aço geram grandes quantidades de efluentes contendo em sua composição metais potencialmente toxicos. Assim, novas tecnologias e processos alternativos para o tratamento de efluentes industriais têm sido desenvolvidos, visando à redução da concentração de metais no meio ambiente. Dentre estes processos, a biossorção tem sido amplamente estudada para a remoção de vários compostos, incluindo os metais, visado o tratamento de águas e efluentes. [4][5][6][7] O processo de biossorção emprega como adsorvente materiais de origem natural o que o torna uma alternativa, economicamente atrativa, para tratamento de águas e efluentes.
