Biosorption of heavy metals by Streptomyces species — an overview

Abstract: Heavy metals, derived from industrial wastewater discharge, present a serious threat to human health and to natural water. Biosorption is regarded as a cost-effective biotechnology for the treatment of high volume and low concentration wastewaters containing heavy metal(s) in the order of 1 to 100 mg L−1. Among the biomaterials for heavy metal removal which have been researched during the past decades is the Streptomyces species, a by-product of an industrial antibiotic fermentation process. This paper describ… Show more

“…Owing to higher affinity of the biological material (sorbent) for the metal ion (sorbate), the latter is attracted and bound with different mechanisms [90]. Different types of mechanisms involved in biosorption phenomenon onto the biomass materials are microprecipitation, electrostatic interaction, chelation, complexation, ion exchange and physical adsorption by van der Waals forces, and chemical adsorption, surface precipitation, or their combinations [91,92].…”

“…Cr(VI) removal from wastewater through microbial reduction of Cr(VI) to its trivalent form is a promising technique [36]. Dead Streptomyces ciscaucasicus and Streptomyces zinciresistens were used as biosorbents for the removal of zinc while Streptomyces aureofaciences was applied as a biosorbent for gold (Au 3+ ) [39]. Radiation-resistant microorganisms useful for environmental cleanup can be naturally occurring or engineered in the laboratory [38].…”
