Bioremediation of Natural Fiber by Graft Copolymerization

Abstract: In this research paper, the Sorrel stem fiber was graft copolymerized by vinyl monomeric mixtures that lead to an increase in the percentage grafting with a significant change in physico-chemico-thermal resistance. Miscibility in organic solvents, hydrophobicity was found to increase whereas crystallinity, crystallinity index, dye-uptake and hydrophylicity decreased after graft copolymerization. These graft copolymers were reinforced in polymer matrix (Phenol-Formaldehyde) to procure green composite. These bio… Show more

“…The performance and quality of the composite product highly depend on fiber matrix adhesion because it influences the stress transfer from the matrix to the fiber. Researchers have reported modifications of the roselle fiber to improve the fiber/matrix interfacial bonding for fabrication of polymer composites for different applications . In addition, review papers covering the chemical and mechanical properties of roselle fibers in polymer composites have been published .…”

“…Generally aqueous ceric ion initiations are performed under acidic conditions to promote higher concentration of Ce(IV) [ 22 , 23 ]. Sadeghi et al , studied on polymethacrylamide grafted onto carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) backbone in a homogeneous solution using a ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator and water as solvent [ 24 ].…”

“…However, these parameters were observed to decrease at much higher concentrations (>3 M). Evidence of hydrolysis shows that the grafted copolymers could be used as flocculants [ 24 ]. Singh V et.al 2007, have synthesised Starch-g-poly(acrylonitrile)Using a very low concentration of potassium persulfate as initiator, acrylamide could be efficiently grafted onto starch under microwave irradiation and for the grafting O 2 removal from the reaction vessel was not required [ 64 ].…”

“…Weak chemical properties of chitosan can be overcome by surface modification/chemical treatments [12] to articulate -NH 2 /-OH proactive groups for dyes adsorption [13] or metal complextion/diffusion in accessible pore size [14]. In this contest, graphite's hexagonal layers that are well-utilized in heat-resistant/reinforced material [15,16] were exploited to yield inter-wined binary composite for Cr(VI) removal are developed.…”
