Biorefinery options to valorize the spent liquor from sulfite pulping

Abstract: BACKGROUND Spent sulfite liquor is a by‐product obtained in the process of manufacturing dissolving pulp by the acid sulfite method. A full physico‐chemical characterization of this waste has been developed in order to determine if it is susceptible to valorization by means of biorefinery processes. RESULTS The main components present in this spent liquor are sugars from hemicelluloses (25.9%), mainly xylose (18.2%) because hardwood is used as a raw material, and lignosulfonates (50.6%). Taking into account th… Show more

“…[66][67][68][69][70] They are the most flexible candidates for biorefinery design and are therefore critical for maximizing the profitability of the lignosulfonate value chain. 71 Many methods have been developed to extract lignosulfonate from SSL. 72 A recent method featuring selective adsorption of lignosulfonate with XAD-7 exemplified Concentration and fractionation are basic needs to manipulate SSL.…”

“…The impregnation value in each trial is obtained taking into account the difference of liquor volume among the input and the output, and using an average value of liquor density of 1054 kg/m 3 obtained in a previous work (Rueda et al, 2015). Therefore, the final impregnation value is given in mg/g dried matter (DM).…”

“…In recent years, half of the world's round wood harvest is used for industrial purposes (Willför et al, 2011). In addition, valorization options in pulping have been studied during the last decades because of the sugar and lignin content of wood, converting the pulp mills into the biorefinery concept (Rueda et al, 2015).…”
