An adhesive protein extracted from marine mussel (Mytilus edulis) was used to bond strips of connective tissue for the purpose of evaluating the use of curing agents to improve adhesive curing. Specifically, mussel adhesive protein solution (MAPS, 0.5 mM dihydroxyphenylalanine) was applied, with or without the curing agents, to the ends of two overlapping strips of porcine small intestinal submucosa. The bond strength of this lap joint was determined after curing for 1 h at room temperature (25°C). The strength of joints formed using only MAPS or with only the ethyl, butyl or octyl cyanoacrylate adhesives were determined. Although joints bonded using ethyl cyanoacrylate were strongest, those using MAPS were stronger than those using butyl and octyl cyanoacrylates. The addition of 25 mM solutions of the transition metal ions V 5+ , Fe 3+ and Cr 6+ , which are all oxidants, increased the bond strength of the MAPS joints. The V 5+ gave the strongest bonds and the Fe 3+ the second strongest. In subsequent tests with V 5+ and Fe 3+ solutions, the bond strength increased with V 5+ concentration, but it did not increase with Fe 3+ concentration. Addition of 250 mM V 5+ gave a very strong bond.

ARTIGO ORIGINAL 69 INTRODUÇÃOApesar dos grandes progressos da cirurgia nas últi-mas décadas, o diagnóstico e o seguimento das doenças hepáticas continuam a oferecer dificuldades para a práti-ca médica 1,2 .A punção hepática, utilizada inicialmente para o diagnóstico e tratamento de abscessos hepáticos, passou a ter finalidades diagnósticas a partir de 1883, quando Paul Ehrlich realizou a primeira biopsia hepática para estudar o conteúdo de glicogênio em fígados diabéticos 1 .Há seis décadas o método passou a ser mais freqüen-temente utilizado com finalidades diagnósticas, tendo sido consolidado a partir da Segunda Guerra Mundial para o estudo de numerosos casos de hepatites virais que acometeram os soldados envolvidos no conflito 1 .As duas únicas contra-indicações absolutas ao mé-todo são o cisto hidático e o hemangioma cavernoso do fígado 1 . Outra contra-indicação para a biopsia hepática são os distúrbios graves de coagulação, medidos pelo alargamento do tempo de protrombina. Alguns autores consideram ainda indispensável para avaliação da coagulação a contagem de plaquetas, cujo limite de segurança estaria em torno de 80.000 [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] .A hemorragia representa cerca de metade das complicações, sendo a principal causa de mortalidade. Estudos realizados relatam que as taxas de hemorragias com necessidade de reposição volêmica atingiram 0,2% a 0,25% das biopsias realizadas, e 6% a 25% destes pacientes necessitaram de laparotomia [2][3][4][5][6][7] .A peritonite biliar representa cerca de 15% das complicações. A disseminação tumoral pelo trajeto da punção é uma complicação rara, porém descrita na literatura. Alguns autores recomendam que a biopsia só deva ser realizada em pacientes não candidatos à ressecção cirúrgica 2,3 .

To enhance the adhesive property of fibrin glue, two techniques were developed. The first is an improvement of the conventional layer method, and the second is a further improvement of the first technique. Their adhesive properties were tested in canine lungs in two phases. In phase 1 of the experiment, two new techniques were compared with the conventional methods in the retrieved lung. In phase 2 of the experiment, the second technique examined how its adhesive properties changed after treatment comparing them with gelatin-resorcinol-formaldehyde-glutaraldehyde (GRFG) glue. In phase 1, the first technique showed a 3-fold enhancement of the adhesive properties as compared with the conventional methods, and with the second technique the adhesive properties were further improved by more than 2-fold in the retrieved canine lung. In phase 2, it was revealed that the bursting pressure of both the second new technique and GRFG glue was eventually equal, and enough to close the cut surface of the lung. In the clinical setting, two techniques showed a safe and satisfactory performance in closing the cut surface of the lung. Due to the low toxicity of fibrin glue and absorbable material, these two techniques, especially the second technique, provide better circumstances for the healing of lung injury.
