Future long-term human exploration of space will need a supply of resources for astronauts, including fresh food from space farms. This means it is necessary to identify combinations of crops that can be successfully grown together and which provide a balanced and palatable diet for astronauts. We used numerical optimization to identify such combinations, using macro-and micronutritional content as constraints, while optimizing water load needed for crop farming. The food constraints considered were based on the recommendations of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), considering up to 36 nutrients and 102 crops. We evaluated 10 scenarios ("space dishes") for daily full-nutrient supply to one astronaut, with four scenarios being vegetarian (crops only) and six being omnivorous (crops and meat). Each scenario was analyzed for the capability of plant growth, including the required planting area and crop growth time and productivity; from the viewpoint of optimizing performance in space. As plants contain both edible and inedible parts and require fertilizer input, respective circularity assessments were made determining the waste generation, degree of recyclability, and overall mass processed, using three common metrics of the circular economy. The space dish identified as optimal was prepared as a salad, to allow judgment on the palatability, i.e., the "space food acceptance," by a small psychology test. These assessments are essential steps toward feasibility in long-term human space missions, for example, to Mars.

An Exploration of Biophilic Design Features within Preschool Interiors

This study examined the incorporation of biophilic elements in Duhok preschool interiors and integrated them into the Biophilic Interior Design Matrix (BID-M). This approach holds great promise for the development of restorative environments. The Biophilic Design Matrix (BDM) is based on Kellert’s list of biophilic design attributes, adjusted to suit preschool interiors. Photos and plan drawings were employed as methods to analyze 59 interior spaces within six preschools, both private and public. The biophilic matrix revealed the presence of 30% of biophilic attributes in the analyzed spaces, with an average score of 16.45 out of 53 total points. Individual scores ranged from 8 to 22 for each space, highlighting variations in biophilic design within the six preschools. Notably, the study identified a lack of biophilic features that foster human–nature relationships in the majority of preschools, albeit minimally observed in some spaces. Conversely, the environmental features scored higher than the average. This research highlights the importance of enhancing biophilic design elements, especially those that strengthen human–nature relationships. The results enhance biophilic design in educational settings, promoting nature-centered, restorative environments for future interventions. Furthermore, we propose an innovative approach for assessing and incorporating biophilia in interiors, recognizing its positive impact on human health and wellbeing.

Biophilic design is an approach for creating resilient, sustainable cities by constructing resilient buildings that connect humans and nature by integrating natural adaptation and aesthetic appeal in urban spaces. Biophilic design enables improved climate resilience and mental health. Semarang City in Java, Indonesia is a concrete jungle metropolis that will benefit from the application of biophilic design. Although several urban parks are constructed in public areas, certain design elements remain extremely simple. For example, the vegetated-setting contextminimal and unable to generate sufficient interest in community physical activities. Hence, the connection between humans and nature is limited, which demonstrates the lack of biophilic design. Thus, the study aims to investigate the use of biophilic design in urban public spaces by promoting resilience. This research uses a quantitative method and analytical tools. Questionnaires and field observations were used to collect data. The study investigated the effectiveness of urban parks on mental health, climate resilience, need for urban park design elements, and the design of urban parks. The study identified three parks with the highest increases in land surface temperatures from 2011 to 2021, which indicates that incorporating biophilic design elements into these locations should be considered. More than half of the users at these parks preferred biophilic design elements, which are effective in lowering air temperature, blending with the surrounding nature, and promoting calming, cost-effective, and beneficial mental and physical health. Using these biophilic elements, the average temperature of the parks could be decreased by approximately 0.5 °C.
