Biopharmaceutical and nanotoxicological aspects of cyclodextrins for non‐invasive topical treatments: A critical review

Abstract: Cyclodextrins are nanometric cyclic oligosaccharides with amphiphilic characteristics that increase the stability of drugs in pharmaceutical forms and bioavailability, in addition to protecting them against oxidation and UV radiation. Some of their characteristics are low toxicity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. They are divided into α‐, β‐, and γ‐cyclodextrins, each with its own particularities. They can undergo surface modifications to improve their performances. Furthermore, their drug inclusion co… Show more

“…To address this hurdle, cyclodextrin (CD), approved for drug delivery by the Food and Drug Administration of the USA (FDA), has caught researchers' attention. [27] CD owns an amphiphilic toroid structure of a hydrophobic interior cavity and a hydrophilic exterior surface. [28] This unique structure makes it promising to be incorporated into hydrophilic nanocarriers for enhancing their encapsulation capacity of hydrophobic drugs.…”

“…Interestingly, cyclodextrins show radiation shielding effects that could prevent oxidative damage. 16 Based on the above considerations, we have chosen an API formulation with extremely high cyclodextrin content. Remdesivir is a prototypical API that has serious solubility 17 and stability 18 problems.…”
