Biopesticides - towards increased consumer safety in the European Union

Abstract: The introduction of new food safety regulations in the European Union has resulted in the withdrawal of many synthetic active substances used in plant protection products, in light of their potential or actual harmful effect on human and animal health, as well as on the environment. Alternatives to these compounds are being developed - naturally occurring pesticides, also referred to as biopesticides. The use of biopesticides in crop protection leads to decreased levels of pesticide residues in foods, and as a… Show more

“…Biological agent commercial companies-such as Koppert or Biobest-also provide information covering pesticide effects on the beneficial arthropods they deliver. Alternatives to more persistent molecules are being developed (Czaja et al 2015;Gerwick and Sparks 2014). Selective biopesticides represent a particularly desirable alternative to chemical pesticides, but a wider range of such products needs to be made available.…”

“…Although biopesticide use at a global scale is increasing by almost 10% every year [6], it appears that the global market must increase further in the future if these pesticides are to play a visible role in substituting for chemical pesticides and reducing the current over-reliance on them. It should be noted, however, that biopesticides are assessed in the EU by the same regulations used for the assessment of synthetic active substances, and this situation required several new provisions in the current legislation, as well as the preparation of new guidelines facilitating the registration of prospective biopesticide products [9]. Currently, there are fewer biopesticide active substances registered in the EU than in the US, India, Brazil, or China.…”

“…This especially applies to the majority of small molecules, light substances and biorational products (Czaja et al 2015), which are mainly produced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Basic substances were recently described (Villaverde et al 2014(Villaverde et al , 2016aMarchand 2015Marchand , 2016 and references therein are a new category of EC phytopharmaceutical Regulation No 1107(EC 2009b as a means of crop protection in agriculture alongside regular chemical active substances leading to plant protection products.…”
