Nations of the world have seen unprecedented changes in climate variables in recent decades. But it is unclear to what extent climate change has impacted and will impact food systems in some developing regions, and how policymakers can frame an approach to encouraging adaptation and advancing climate-smart agriculture. Many studies attempting to link agroecology to climate change adaptation do so without understanding the potential of Agroecology not only to mitigate climate change – which is the weak response – but to reverse its impact and ‘climate proof’ our food systems. By modeling the near and far future impacts of climate change on crop production, we showed how climate will impact crop production under two crop production systems (agroecology and non-agroecology production systems). The overarching aim is to derive sustainable development strategies and lessons for policymakers and climate researchers - essential components of environment and Agricultural development. Using case studies from Nigeria, we observed that transitioning to agroecology, even at the farm level also transforms farm designs, thereby affecting their overall food and nutrition status. The result showed that the use of agroecology management practices not only reduces the impact of climate change in the near future but will also lead to increased crop yield in the future. The finding suggests that to feed the over 400 million projected population of Nigeria by 2050, the use of agroecological practices will be a better alternative to the conventional farming methods. To advance the use of agroecological farming methods, governments at every level in Nigeria need to mainstream organic agriculture in national government policies. This is important as it will not only address climate change impacts but also hunger and poverty.

To reduce the impact of chemical pesticides on the environment, there are relevant efforts to enhance the possibility of controlling plant diseases using environmentally friendly biocontrol agents or natural products that show pathogen control capacity. The European Union, FAO, and the United Nations largely promote and finance projects and programs in order to introduce crop protection principles that can attain sustainable agriculture. Preventive measures related to the choice of cultivars, soil fertility, integrated pest management (IPM), and organic farming strategies are still the basis for obtaining satisfactory crop yields and reducing classical pesticide utilisation through the application of commercially available and ecofriendly control agents. Effective pathogen detection at borders to avoid quarantine pathogens is mandatory to reduce the risk of future epidemics. New technical support for the development of sustainable pathogen control is currently being provided by forecasting models, precision farming, nanotechnology, and endotherapy. New biocontrol agents and natural products, disease management through plant nutrition, systemic resistance inducers, and gene-silencing technology will provide solutions for obtaining satisfactory disease control in horticulture. The “multi-stakeholder partnership” strategy can promote the implementation of sustainable crop protection.

A key objective for herbicide research is to develop new compounds with improved bioactivity. Protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO) is an essential target for herbicide discovery. Here, we report using an in silico structure-guided optimization approach of our previous lead compound 1 and designed and synthesized a new series of compounds 2−6. Systematic bioassays led to the discovery of a highly potent compound 6g,)-dione, which exhibited an excellent and wide spectrum of weed control at the rates of 30−75 g ai/ha by the postemergence application and is relatively safe on maize at 75 g ai/ha. Additionally, the K i value of 6g to Nicotiana tabacum PPO (NtPPO) was found to be 2.5 nM, showing 3-, 12-, and 18-fold higher potency relative to compound 1 (K i = 7.4 nM), trifludimoxazin (K i = 31 nM), and flumioxazin (K i = 46 nM), respectively. Furthermore, molecular simulations further suggested that the thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4-dione moiety of 6g could form a more favorable π−π stacking interaction with the Phe392 of NtPPO than the heterocyclic moiety of compound 1. This study provides an effective strategy to obtain enzyme inhibitors with improved performance through molecular simulation and structure-guided optimization.
