Bionomics of Anopheles quadrimaculatus and Culex erraticus (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Falls Lake Basin, North Carolina: Seasonal Changes in Abundance and Gonotrophic Status, and Host-Feeding Patterns

Abstract: Larval and adult Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say (sensu lato) and Culex erraticus (Dyar & Knab) were collected at Falls of the Neuse Lake (Falls Lake) in North Carolina from May 1985 to December 1986. Adult mosquitoes were aspirated weekly from shelters in woodlands adjacent to larval sampling sites. An. quadrimaculatus and Cx. erraticus comprised > 95% of the total number of mosquitoes collected. An. quadrimaculatus adults exhibited vernal and autumnal peaks of abundance during both years. Cx. erraticus adults … Show more

“…quadrimaculatus complex of sibling species was described (Reinert et al 1997). These data corroborate previous studies (Apperson and Lanzaro, 1991;Robertson et al 1993) reporting that Anopheles mosquitoes in this species complex fed mainly on large mammals. The discovery that Oc.…”

“…In North Carolina, the abundance of larval and adult Cx. erraticus decreased with rising lake levels (Robertson et al 1993), a situation similar to that seen at the Iuka wetland. This species also may occur in large numbers in semipermanent rice Þelds with ßoodwater mosquitoes such as Psorophora spp.…”

“…All of the six mosquito species shown to feed on alligators in the current study also were shown to feed on birds and mammals, which supports previous reports that females of all of these species are opportunistic feeders (Means 1968, Edman 1974, Robertson et al 1993, Molaei et al 2007). Cupp et al (2004) identiÞed bird, mammal, and reptile blood meals from Cx.…”
