Species diversity and community composition of mosquitoes in a filariasis endemic area in Banyuasin District, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 453-462. Mosquitoes are well known as the most medically important arthropod vectors which should be monitored and evaluated because of their potential to transmit diseases. One step in monitoring and evaluation could be conducted by assessing the presence of prevalent mosquito’s vectors including their species diversity and composition. The present study has successfully recorded the diversity and community composition of mosquitoes in two villages in Banyuasin District, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The research was conducted for four months from December 2016 to March 2017 by collecting mosquitoes using Indoor and Outdoor Human Landing Collection method (HLC). The result shows that there were 8239 mosquitoes collected consisting of 12 genera and 38 species. Mansonia is found as the most dominant genus in Sedang Village, while in Muara Sugih Village, Culex is the most dominant. Assessment on species diversity showed that Sedang Village haes higher diversity compared to Muara Sugih Village. Further analysis indicates that environmental characteristics and presence of water plant play important role in the diversity, abundance, and dominance of mosquitoes. Waterlogged area covered with Pistia stratiotes in Sedang Village likely facilitate the breeding of Mansonia spp while extensive rice field in Muara Sugih Village may enable the high numbers of Culex spp. Anopheles spp. and Aedes spp. mosquitoes. The findings of this study suggest the rationale for the high cases of filariasis in Banyuasin District. Future research should be directed to reveal mosquitoes’ dispersal pattern and its potential as disease vector, the risk of transmitted disease, and further prevention to reduce the number of filariasis cases.

BackgroundAnopheles maculatus, a species of the Maculatus Group of subgenus Cellia (Diptera: Culicidae), is an important vector of human malarial protozoa in Java, Indonesia. However, the identity of this species in Indonesia has been questionable because published reports and records are based mainly on morphological identification, which is unreliable for distinguishing members of the Maculatus Group due to overlapping characters.MethodsWe performed morphological assessments, metaphase karyotype preparations, phylogenetic analyses of ITS2 and cox2 sequence data and cross-mating experiments to determine whether the Javanese form and An. maculatus (s.s.) from Thailand were conspecific.ResultsThe adults of the Java strain are similar to those of An. maculatus (s.s.), but the larvae and pupae exhibit significant differences. The metaphase karyotype of Javanese specimens includes a long acrocentric X chromosome and a small telocentric Y chromosome, which are distinct from other members of the Maculatus Group. Cross-mating of the Java strain with An. maculatus (s.s.) revealed genetic incompatibility. Phylogenetic analysis of ITS2 and cox2 sequences revealed that the Java strain forms a single clade that is distinct from clades of other members of the group (Kimura 2-parameter, K2P, genetic distances 3.1–19.2% and 1.6–9.6%, respectively).ConclusionsThis study provides evidence that the Javanese form of An. maculatus is not conspecific with An. maculatus (s.s.) and constitutes a previously unrecognized species of the Maculatus Group.

Filariasis adalah penyakit menular menahun disebabkan oleh cacing filaria dan ditularkan oleh berbagai spesies nyamuk seperti Mansonia, Anopheles, Culex, Aedes, dan Armigeres. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui keanekaragaman dan perilaku menggigit nyamuk sebagai vektor potensial penularan filariasis di Kabupaten Banyuasin, Sumatera Selatan. Penangkapan nyamuk dilakukan selama 12 jam dari pukul 18.00–06.00 dengan metode human landing collection dan animal biting trap. Pada Desember 2016 hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sampel nyamuk yang ditangkap di daerah studi berjumlah 16 spesies dengan spesies paling dominan yang ditemukan adalah Mansonia uniformis (47,28%), Culex tritaeniorhynchus (23,89%), dan Culex vishnui (14,48%). Ma. uniformis memiliki perilaku menggigit lebih banyak di luar rumah dengan rata-rata angka perilaku menggigit (man biting rate/MBR) sebesar 100,50 nyamuk/malam dan angka kepadatan gigitan nyamuk (man hour density/MHD) sebesar 11,90 dan merupakan yang tertinggi dari semua spesies nyamuk yang ditemukan. Analisis parity rate melalui pembedahan terhadap nyamuk dewasa mengkonfirmasi bahwa perkiraan umur populasi Ma. uniformis adalah 31,8 hari dan Ma. uniformis terdeteksi positif sebagai vektor penularan filariasis.
