The rational design of desirable lightweight structural materials usually needs to meet the strict requirements of mechanical properties. Seeking optimal integration strategies for lightweight structures and high mechanical performance is always of great research significance in the rapidly developing composites field, which also draws significant attention from materials scientists and engineers. However, the intrinsic incompatibility of low mass and high strength is still an open challenge for achieving satisfied engineering composites. Fortunately, creatures in nature tend to possess excellent lightweight properties and mechanical performance to improve their survival ability. Thus, by ingenious structure configuration, lightweight structural biomaterials with simple components can achieve high mechanical performance. This review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in three typical structures in natural biomaterials: cellular structures, fibrous structures, and sandwich structures. For each structure, typical organisms are selected for comparison, and their compositions, structures, and properties are discussed in detail, respectively. In addition, bioinspired design approaches of each structure are briefly introduced. At last, the outlook on the design and fabrication of bioinspired composites is also presented to guide the development of advanced composites in future practical engineering applications.

A large eddy simulation (LES) of a squirrel cage fan (SCF) provides a precise representation of turbulent flows with different degrees of complexity. This study comprehensively analyzes the coherent structures of turbulent flows in an SCF using an LES, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), and multi-resolution dynamic mode decomposition (mrDMD). An intelligent reduced-order model is established by integrating hierarchical deep learning and the sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics. The result shows that the evolution of the global DMD modes is attenuated due to the spatial distribution variations of localized high-frequency mrDMD modes, along with the fragmented and non-steady development of modal patterns. Unlike POD, DMD quantifies the quality of the impeller inlet environment and captures the antisymmetric low-dimensional flows associated with the shedding of rotating vortex structures. The interaction strength between stationary and dynamic rotating areas is accurately represented by attractors characterized by petal-like structures. The trajectory of the attractors faithfully maps the antisymmetric structural attributes, quasi-periodic behavior, and gradual attenuation characteristics exhibited by DMD modes. The number of petal-like systems and their temporal oscillations are in good agreement with the number of fan blades and their rotational cycles. This study provides new insight into fan engineering to advance flow control strategies and improve the understanding of the underlying flow mechanisms.

Due to the complexity of the working conditions and the diversity of application scenarios, the normal operation of a fan, whether volute tongue, volute shell surface, or blade, often encounters some unavoidable problems, such as flow separation, wear, vibration, etc.; the aerodynamic noise caused by these problems has a significant impact on the normal operation of the fan. However, despite the use of aerodynamic acoustics to design low-noise fans or the use of sound absorption, sound insulation, and sound dissipation as the main traditional noise control techniques, they are in a state of technical bottleneck. Thus, the search for more efficient methods of noise reduction is looking toward the field of bionics. For this purpose, this paper first analyzes the mechanism of fan noise in the volute tongue and blades, and then, this paper reviews the noise control mechanism and improvement research using the bionic structures in the volute tongue structure, the contact surface of the volute shell, and the leading and trailing edges of the blade in the centrifugal fan. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of bionic structures for aerodynamic noise control of centrifugal fans are discussed.
