Bionic Design of a Potato Digging Shovel with Drag Reduction Based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) in Clay Soil

Abstract: The resistance of ordinary potato digging shovels can increase dramatically when used in a clay soil because of the adhesion between the soil and shovel. In this paper, a new type of bionic potato digging shovel was designed to decrease adhesion. The bionic structural elements, i.e., scalelike units (S-U) were applied to the potato digging shovel with inspiration from pangolin scales. The discrete element method (DEM) considered cohesion was used to simulate the drag reduction performance in clayey soil condit… Show more

“…The energy consumption during the operation is mainly composed of the forward movement energy consumption Q 1 , stubble breaking power consumption Q 2 and reciprocating deflection energy consumption Q 3 of deep loosening shovel, while the elastic potential energy stored in the elastic mechanism Q 4 can offset some of the energy consumption. Therefore, the operating energy consumption can be derived from Equation (13).…”

“…Equation (14) shows that reciprocating deflection distance Δ͡ L' of BSD is minimal. Equation (13) shows that the Q 3 value of the BSD is the lowest. The elastic system of the BSD is designed in series-parallel so that the equivalent elastic modulus of the elastic system remains constant, and the same deflection angle as the other two machines can be obtained at hinge ①, while a certain deflection angle will be produced at hinges ② and ( and ③ ① and ② ③ in the text corresponds to the criteria in Figure 5).…”

“…In view of the potential advantages of biomimetics, researchers have also developed various biomimetic potato digging shovels with excellent draught force reduction or antiadhesion performance, such as a biomimetic convex dome shaped shovel [14], mole cricket inspired shovel [15], earthworm inspired shovel [16], wild boar inspired shovel [17], etc. In fact, the macroscopic shape, microscopic morphology and cutting edge of soil engaging components have a great effect on drought force [18].…”

“…This not only leads to increased subsoiling resistance, increased energy consumption, and poor subsoiling operation quality but also is easy to cause damage to machines and tools in severe conditions [15]. This problem can be solved by bionics, electroosmosis, and vibration methods [16][17][18]. The bionic and electro-osmosis approaches are highly dependent on the parameters such as soil type, moisture content, and soil firmness, although they can achieve resistance reduction [19,20].…”
