Bionanocomposites of PLA/PBAT/organophilic clay: preparation and characterization

Abstract: The objective of this study was to develop bionanocomposites from blends of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and from 3% and 6% bentonite clay. Initially, the bentonite clay was treated with Praepagen salt, and the properties of the modified clay were evaluated. After the organophilization of the clay was completed, 50:50 blends of PLA/PBAT were prepared, and 3 and 6% clay was added. To test the dispersion of the system, the blending sequence was performed using eight … Show more

“…Figure 6 shows the results of the elastic modulus of neat PLA, PLAr and blends (PLA/PLAr), respectively. The PLA presented an elastic modulus around 1219.5 MPa, a typical value for fragile polymers (Barbosa et al, 2019). The elastic module of the PLAr was approximately 1139.3 MPa, corresponding to a slight decrease of 6.6%, in relation to the reference specimen of PLA.…”

“…The tensile strength modulus and glass transition temperature of PLA-based biocomposite films incorporating mesoporous silica NPs (MSNPs) improved, whereas PLA/MSNPs combined with CEO enhanced antibacterial efficacy against microbial strains (Lu et al , 2021). Similarly, the active PBAT composite film incorporated with various quantities of oregano essential oil for fish fillet storage exhibits high antimicrobial resistance against S. aureus and psychrotrophic microbes (Cardoso et al , 2017).…”

“…Subsequently, active packaging is a novel technology for the control of pathogens and microorganisms in food products to enhance their shelf life. The addition of organophilic clay to the polylactic acid (PLA)/PBAT blend increases the hybrid composite film's mechanical characteristics (Barbosa et al, 2019). The addition of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles (ZnONPs) to the PLA/PBAT composite film improved mechanical properties, barrier properties, and antibacterial activity against E. coli and L. monocytogenes (Shankar and Rhim, 2016).…”
