In the current study differentiation of the total proteins among Biomphalaria alexandrina snails at different ages was done to identify the proteins responsible for the snails’ compatibility outcome. The work was conducted on snails that differ in their age and the genetic backgrounds. Four subgroups from the progeny of self reproduced susceptible and resistant snails were studies. Infection rates of these subgroups (young susceptible, adult susceptible, young resistant and adult resistant) were 90%, 75%, 40% and 0% respectively. Using Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, differences in protein expression were shown between adult and young snails in different subgroups. Dice similarity coefficient was calculated to determine percentage band sharing among the experimental subgroups. The results revealed that the combination of similarities between both age and compatibility status of the snails has led to the highest similarity coefficient followed by the combination of similarities of both genetic origin and age although they differ in the compatibility status. On the other hand, the differences in the genetic background, age and compatibility status have led to the least similarity index. It was also found that in young snails the genetic background plays the main role in determination of their compatibility, while the internal defense system has the upper hand in determination of adult compatibility. Further characterization of the shared protein bands among the studied subgroups is needed to clarify their role in host-parasite relationship.

In the present study, copper nanoparticles were fabricated and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Improvement of the molluscicidal activity of Anagalis arvensis ethanolic extract was made using CuO NPs by forming plant nanocomposite (ACuO NC). The results showed that ACuO NC has high molluscicidal activity against B. alexandrina snails; recording LC 50 and LC 90 were 1.76 and 3.16 ppm, respectively. Also, biochemical parameters (Total protein, ALT, AST and ALP) revealed highly significant changes in treated snails with sublethal concentrations (LC 10 and LC 25 ) of ACuO NC. However, histopathological changes occurred in the hermaphrodite glands of snails exposed to these concentrations of nanocomposite were detected, where, the ova and sperms degenerated and there were losses of connective tissues between acini. ACuO NC was more safety when tested against the biological indicator Daphnia magna. These observations prove that ACuO NC has potent molluscicidal activity against the intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni with more safety for aquatic environment.

The identification of snails of the genus Biomphalaria can be done using morphological characteristics which depends on the size of the snails and skill and knowledge of researcher. These methods sometimes are not adequate for identification of species. The PCR-RFLP, using the ITS region of the rDNA, has been used to identify Brazilian species of the genus Biomphalaria. Nevertheless, there is a lack of information about snails from other Latin American countries. In addition, some snails may be infected by Schistosoma mansoni and when submitted to PCR-RFLP they show molecular profiles different from those previously standardized for the other mollusc species. In this work the molecular profiles of 15 species and the subspecies were established by PCR-RFLP of ITS-rDNA with the enzyme DdeI. Moreover, the molecular profiles of host species, B. glabrata, B. straminea, B. tenagophila, and B. prona, infected by S. mansoni were also established. The molluscs were dissected to permit morphological identification. These results contribute to a correct identification of snails of the genus Biomphalaria and detection of these snails infected by S. mansoni.
