Biomonitoring of Four Contrasting Wetlands of Kolkata, West Bengal Based on Zooplankton Ecodynamics and Biotic Indices

Abstract: East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) has been assigned the status of Ramsar Site because of its vastness as well as self purification capabilities which have been utilized by local people for the massive agricultural and aquaculture production for more than one century. In this context, an attempt has been made in the present paper to evaluate the existing environmental health of four selected contrasting wetlands of this eco-zone of global importance by qualitative and quantitative hydrobiological studies. Two of the s… Show more

“…The low diversity index showed heavy pollution in ZLH, SXH, and QH. Natural lakes have a self-purification system and healthy zooplankton structure that polluted lakes lack, due to frequent water fluctuation (good fluidity) [36,37]. The high total biomass and density of zooplankton in DHC and SH may be explained by the strict protection of the waters by local governments and good natural fluidity (DHC and SH connect to the main lake when the water level reaches 17.3 m and NH connects to the main lake at a higher water level).…”

“…Constructed wetlands (CWs) are designed and constructed to simulate the biological, chemical, and physical processes that happen in natural wetlands (Zhang et al 2014). Wetlands are one of the most productive life support systems in the world and they are very important to mankind in socio-economic and ecological fields (Sanyal et al 2015). Wetlands with macrophytes are natural systems that can be used for the treatment of domestic wastewater.…”

“…31,34 It was noted that the environmental variables recorded at Captain Bhery nearly covered the value ranges of corresponding parameters obtained at other different EKW sites. [50][51][52] The Captain Bhery was thus considered to be sufficiently stable and dynamic to be a representative water body for the EKW, and the complex interplay of the different hydrological factors and their impact on the phytoplankton population observed at this site could be extended for majority of the EKW. Here the phytoplankton biomass was found to uctuate seasonally and appeared to be highly inuenced by the nutrient regime as well as environmental conditions.…”
