Compared to conventional manufacturing processes, 3D printing has proved its capability of building various structures with high accuracy and material economy. 4D printing adds the fourth dimension, time, to 3D printing technology. Changing through time is a key property of products built by 4D printing. This research focused on bio-based responsive materials, as a means of initiating change and transforming 3D printing to 4D printing. A number of studies have been done to develop the performance of responsive materials or to explore geometric structures for these materials in order to configure products that can benefit from this transformation. Precedents in medical field show great potential for combining bio-based materials with 4D printing in manufacturing highly customised products that adapt to the shape, movement and physiological requirements of a human body. This research project was initiated by the development of printable and responsive bio-based polymers through the National Science Challenge (NSC) Portfolio 5 Spearhead Project “Additive manufacturing and 3D or 4D printing of bio-composites”. The research is inspired by the adaptability and biocompatibility of the medical precedents and explores the possibility of engaging 4D printing in building wearable devices; exemplified by an adaptive wrist splint for progressive rehabilitation. This included researching wound healing processes and related rehabilitation methods to determine the required functionality of the splint and exploring relevant biological structures as inspiration for the design geometry. Working alongside materials scientists, the design was developed along two paths. Firstly, using the new experimental polymers and testing their responsiveness to configure a printable shape- shifting layer of the splint that adapts to changes in the wrist during the healing process. Secondly, integrating these experiments into 3D models for an adaptive splint, comprised of three layers, that responds to the requirements of progressive rehabilitation. The research challenges the properties of the new materials and the associated printing processes, and more research will need to be done to improve both printability and responsive performance. However, the design of the splint provides a case study for potential applications in the broader field of wearable devices that incorporate multiple layers of responsive materials and different geometries that can adapt to the needs of a human body.

Nature can be a source of unlimited inspiration, biomimicry is an innovative approach to find sustainable solutions to overcome problems and meet human needs by imitating existing patterns and strategies in nature. The Industrial Revolution 4.0 brought many changes in human life, changes in lifestyles, ways of working, ways of learning, and ways of communicating between humans in many aspects. Most University students make use of technology to find and develop their ideas especially in creative industries where the OIM (Observe, Imitate, Modify) practice can be done through the Internet by observing from another researcher's observation. While biomimicry offers researchers to observe nature and create technology innovation inspired by nature. Students need to experience and learn from nature and use technology wisely. This study examines the biomimicryinspired works of Product Design undergraduate program students of Podomoro University Jakarta. The methodology research that we use in this study is a qualitative participatory method with comparative and correlational studies. The content of this study is to learn and evaluate the process and result of student's biomimicry observation into innovative product design. The conclusion can also be drawn that comparing the different levels of students which is the first year, second year, and third-year students by using the biomimicry observation approach will show variated concepts and skills on their work depending on what knowledge that they have learned from each semester. Pembelajaran Biomimikri sebagai Inspirasi dalam Inovasi Desain Produk di Era Revolusi Industri 4.0 ABSTRAK Alam dapat menjadi sumber inspirasi tanpa batas, biomimikri adalah pendekatan inovatif untuk menemukan solusi berkelanjutan untuk mengatasi berbagai permasalahan dan memenuhi kebutuhan manusia dengan meniru pola serta strategi yang nyata di alam. Revolusi Industri 4.0 membawa banyak perubahan dalam kehidupan manusia, perubahan gaya hidup, cara bekerja, cara belajar, dan cara berkomunikasi antara manusia dalam banyak aspek. Sebagian besar mahasiswa memanfaatkan teknologi untuk menemukan dan mengembangkan ideide mereka terutama di industri kreatif di mana praktik ATM (Amati, Tiru, Modifikasi) dapat dilakukan melalui Internet dengan mengamati dari pengamatan peneliti lain. Sementara biomimikri menawarkan peneliti untuk mengamati alam dan menciptakan inovasi teknologi yang terinspirasi oleh alam. Diharapkan dengan riset ini siswa bisa mendapatkan pengalaman nyata, mereka dapat termotivasi untuk mempelajari alam dan juga dapat menggunakan teknologi secara bijaksana. Riset ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji karya-karya yang terinspirasi biomimikri dari mahasiswa program sarjana jurusan Desain Produk Universitas Agung Podomoro Jakarta. Metodologi penelitian yang digunakan dalam riset ini adalah metode kualitatif parsitipatif dengan pendekatan korelatif serta komparatif. Konten kajian dalam studi ini merupakan evaluasi serta proses pembelajaran mahasiswa dalam penciptaan desain produk inovatif. Dari hasil riset ini dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa ternyata setelah melakukan perbandingan rancangan mahasiswa tahun pertama, kedua dan ketiga dengan menggunakan pendekatan observasi biomimikri maka ditemukan adanya perbedaan hasil serta tingkat keterampilan pada masing-masing angkatan tergantung dari pengetahuan yang mereka telah pelajari dan dapatkan di setiap semesternya.

There have been many biomimetic research works which look into the relationship between nature and architecture in order to propose an innovative solution. People have been considering nature as an inspiring source of knowledge. It is also a mentor and measure in creating an innovative solution. This trend is known as biomimicry. However, the basic concept of biomimicry is not merely copying the nature, but it is an abstraction of nature's fundamental principle and function. This study aims to discover the potential of a tropical rainforest as an effective microclimate modifier in the urban setting. By using the 'top-down' or 'problem-based' biomimetic approach, the canopy layers of tropical rainforest can be generated into a multi-layer planting system, as a part of urban green infrastructure. Observation, documentation, and LAI measurement were conducted in this research to determine the appropriate species to be planted in a multi-layer planting concept. The three selected layers were defined based on the density and characteristic of the leaves as well as the Leaf Area Index (LAI). Edible and/or medicinal plants were fully considered in this research to highlight the food security issue and farm-to-table movement. In the future, the recommended plants species will be beneficial as a guideline to determine the appropriate species to be planted on a balcony of a high-rise building in tropical urban setting.
