Biomimetic taro leaf-like films decorated on wood surfaces using soft lithography for superparamagnetic and superhydrophobic performance

Abstract: The surfaces of plants represent multifunctional interfaces between the organisms and the environment. In this paper, biomimetic taro leaf-like structures with superparamagnetic and superhydrophobic performances were exactly copied on the wood surface through the soft lithography to improve the wood properties. Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were mixed into poly(dimethylsiloxane) PDMS suspensions to obtain Fe 3 O 4 /PDMS suspensions that commonly endow coats magnetic and microwave absorption properties, which were the… Show more

“…These composites generally exhibit superior stiffness, strength, and heat distortion temperatures with respect to unreinforced polymers 20 . Nanoparticles such as nanometric CaCO 3 21 , SiO 2 22 , Fe 3 O 4 23 , TiO 2 24 , and ZnO 25 particles have been used to prepare nanocomposites. Among the various reinforcing materials, CaCO 3 is attractive because of its low cost.…”

“…22 Others applied small-scale structure onto a hydrophobic PDMS coating. [23][24][25] These modied surfaces of intrinsically hydrophilic wood substrate reached WCA above 150 but were prepared using complex or time-consuming processes. Most of these procedures consist of two or more production steps, including at least one immersion or autoclave treatment hardly suitable for continuous and efficient large scale production.…”

“…The bands at 1260 and 1060 cm −1 were assigned to C–O–C (aryl-alkyl ether linkage) stretching vibration and C–O (alkoxy) stretching vibration, respectively [ 24 ]. The absorption peak at 561 cm −1 was attributed to Fe–O stretching vibration [ 25 , 26 ], which confirmed that the Fe 3 O 4 NPs were mixed in the fiber. The characteristic peaks of fiber were not weakened or disappeared, whereas the characteristic peaks of metal-oxide became strengthened.…”
