Biomimetic Nanoemulsions for Oxygen Delivery In Vivo

Abstract: Blood transfusion is oftentimes required for patients suffering from acute trauma or undergoing surgical procedures in order to help maintain the body’s oxygen levels. The continued demand worldwide for blood products is expected to put significant strain on available resources and infrastructure. Unfortunately, efforts to develop viable alternatives to human red blood cells for transfusion have generally been unsuccessful. Here, we report on a hybrid natural–synthetic nanodelivery platform that combines the b… Show more

“…With increasing reports on the potential of biomimetic drug carriers, more recent research has been focused on their functionality . Another attractive aspect of the use of cell membranes as surface coatings is the fact that they can effectively inherit proteins or other biologically active molecules from their source and “mimic” the source cells' characteristic activities in vivo . This advantage has already been explored for camouflages derived from a wide range of cells, including platelets, leukocytes, macrophages, stem cells, and cancer cells .…”

“…Cell membrane–coated nanoparticles, with their unique properties, have recently been leveraged in the design of anticancer vaccines . RBC‐NPs are known for their reduced host immune interactions and have been used extensively as a delivery vehicle . Along these lines, RBC‐NPs were used as a carrier for glycoprotein 100 (gp100), a tumor‐associated antigen enriched in B16F10 melanoma .…”

“…[43] Zhang's group developed nanoemulsions consisting of perfluorocarbon stabilized by RBC membrane (RBC-PFC) for alternative blood transfusion. [44] The nanoformulation can be stored for a long time and showed improved oxygen-carrying ability. RBC-PFC may have the potential as an alternative to RBCs for transfusion.…”
