Biomimetic Fluorapatite–Gelatine Nanocomposites: Pre‐Structuring of Gelatine Matrices by Ion Impregnation and Its Effect on Form Development

Abstract: Form follows the ion: The morphogenesis of fluorapatite–gelatine nanocomposites is studied from both electron microscopy and atomistic simulation revealing ion impregnation effects on the growth mechanisms. Depending on the ionic species used for pre‐treatment of the organic component dramatic changes of the mesoscopic structuring are observed.

“…[116] Intermediates obtained in a Liesegang band next to the calcium source show fan-like morphology, whereas fractal growth was observed for the intermediates obtained from both the band next to phosphate source and the middle band. Interestingly, fan-like morphologies are straight and hard, whereas fractal morphologies are bent and soft.…”

“…3) was achieved by diffusion of calcium -and orthophosphate + fluoride solutions from opposite sides into a tube filled with a gelatin gel. [444][445][446][447][448][449][450][451][452][453] The reasons for this phenomenon are not quite clear yet; besides, up to now, nothing has yet been reported on a possible biomedical application for such very unusual structural composites.…”
