Biometric measurement of the mouse eye using optical coherence tomography with focal plane advancement

Abstract: By focal plane advancement of a real-time OCT instrument through the mouse eye, highly repeatable measurements of the ocular dimensions were obtained. This novel method may be used to study small animal models of normal and abnormal eye development.

“…They were measured as described using a custom-made optical coherence tomography (OCT). 37 Mice were intraperitoneally anesthetized with a mixture of 0.12 g/mL ketamine hydrochloride and 1.8 mg/mL xylazine hydrochloride before the measurement. The injection volume was 8 mL/kg of body weight.…”

“…55 Recently, Zhou et al developed a custom-built real-time optical-coherence tomography (OCT) instrument with a stepper motor, which has been proven to be highly repeatable in measuring individual parts of the mouse eye, including the cornea, anterior chamber, lens, vitreous, and retina. 56 They also successfully used a custombuilt photoretinoscope to measure refraction and a keratometer to measure the corneal radius of curvature. 52 These new techniques could be used in further study.…”
