Biometric Analysis of Hunteria umbellata (K.Schum.) Hallier f and Metformin in the treatment of diabetes

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Diabetes is a disease of genetic and environmental origin. It affects the glucose-insulin endocrine metabolic regulatory system due to the malfunction of the insulin producing cells of the pancreas. The purpose of this study is to carry out a comparative analysis of the potencies of hunteria umbellata and metformin on Type 1 diabetes mellitus using bio-statistical analysis. The period of attaining normal blood glucose level across times was taken into consideration as a basis for comparing the efficac… Show more

“…The results from this study conform to results obtained by Aguwamba, (2022) and Oboh et al (2019). Furthermore, Ajibola et al (2018) also experimented and got similar results. The renal modulating potential may have been due to Phenols found in this plant as this is known to improve renal function (Ganesan et al, 2018).…”

“…Data interpretation from the study concluded that metformin cures diabetes mellitus in 8 weeks, while H. umbellate aqueous seed extract attains a more effective result in about 3 weeks. Biometric analysis of the study concluded that the extract was better than metformin by a factor of 2.67 [83].…”

“…The hypoglycemic effect of the seed extract of HU has been documented in normal, high glucose, and nicotinic-induced hyperglycemic rats [50]. When compared to metformin, Ajibola et al [13] found that aqueous seed extract of HU reduced fasting blood glucose in type 2 diabetes patients in just a few weeks, with fewer side effects.…”

“…Oral toxicity studies on experimental animals have validated its safety [12]. However, there has been a report of frequent vomiting caused by an allergic reaction to the extreme bitterness of its seed extract [13]. More so, the bioactive molecules abundant in plants are usually unstable in the gastro intestinal tract due to elevated pH and harsh conditions that render them less effective.…”
