Biomedical Applications of Bacterial Exopolysaccharides: A Review

Abstract: Bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are an essential group of compounds secreted by bacteria. These versatile EPSs are utilized individually or in combination with different materials for a broad range of biomedical field functions. The various applications can be explained by the vast number of derivatives with useful properties that can be controlled. This review offers insight on the current research trend of nine commonly used EPSs, their biosynthesis pathways, their characteristics, and the biomedical app… Show more

“…As drug carriers, EPS can be modified to facilitate the controlled release of drugs, increase the shelf life of drugs in the body, and improve drug efficacy. Antibiotics are often used as a model for drug release by bacterial EPS [ 168 , 227 , 228 ]. In a study by Wang et al [ 229 ], it was reported that encapsulation with kefiran was able to protect ciprofloxacin from gastric conditions.…”

“…In most gram-negative bacteria, where a wide range of molecular structures is presented in EPSs, one of two mechanisms has been identified to follow their biosynthesis and release [ 41 ]. The main components of this integration system are the Wzx flippase, Wzy polymerase, and Wzz chain-length regulator proteins of the integral inner membrane that have defied detailed structural and functional characterization [ 44 ].…”

“…Drug delivery, medicinal coatings, surgical sealants, and anticancer activities are just a few of the medical and industrial applications for EPS [6]. Aerococcus, Carnobacterium, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Leuconostoc, Oenococcus, Pediococcus, Streptococcus, and Weissella, were reported to leave a significant impact in rapid industrialization [7].…”
