Biomechanics of incisor retraction with mini-implant anchorage

Abstract: Mini-implants have been successfully incorporated into orthodontic practice all over the world. One of the most popular applications of mini-implant anchorage is to facilitate retraction of the anterior teeth. This article reviews the mechanics involved in anterior tooth retraction with mini-implant supported anchorage. An attempt has been made to synthesize information available in the literature and present it in a manner that is easily understandable from a clinical perspective. We discuss the fundamental d… Show more

“…Upadhayay et al 27 suggested retraction force to be angulated when applied from mini-screw whereas in the conventional techniques force vector remains parallel to the occlusal plane. Antoszewska-Smith et al 28 stated retraction with mini-screw is more efficient with minimum undesirable effects.…”

“…The use of orthodontic mini-implants also provides conditions for the guided tooth movement and traction of desired posterior jaw segments [10][11][12]. Previous authors informed a 91% success rate of temporary anchorage devices in the form of palatally installed implants [13][14][15].…”
