Biomechanical and Remodeling Factors in the Interpretation of Fractures in Juveniles

Abstract: Interpretation of juvenile trauma requires understanding of biomechanical and remodeling factors, as well as the dynamics of the growth process. Although terminology relating especially to biomechanical factors can be complex, use of proper terms is essential to avoid misunderstanding. Analysis can include direct observation, individual history documentation, radiography, microscopy, and bone scintigram study. In addition to the appearance of the trauma, relevant observations include the type and area of bone … Show more

“…See Frick and Jones (2009) for a more in depth discussion of pediatric fracture healing. For example, in an adult union of a femoral fracture with primary callus formation may take 3 months, 2 months in a 15 year old and one month in an infant (Ubelaker and Montaperto, 2011).…”

“…Past events of trauma producing bone fractures are particularly useful since they usually require medical treatment and such treatment likely involves radiography. Radiographic study of antemortem lesions and fractures on recovered remains can be generally dated (timing of the event prior to death) through the extent of bone remodeling (Ubelaker and Montaperto, 2011). Such evaluation must consider the location of the injury and the age of the individual but can provide useful information.…”
