Biomass trans-Anethole-Based Hollow Polymer Particles: Preparation and Application as Sustainable Absorbent

Abstract: A novel type of hollow polymer particles containing carboxyl groups was prepared from a widely available biophenylpropene trans-anethole (ANE). To prepare the hollow particles, we first prepared polymeric particles using vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride (MAH), and then such particles were taken as sacrificial templates for the subsequent formation of core/shell particles, which were synthesized by using ANE and MAH as comonomers and divinylbenzene (DVB) as cross-linking agent through precipitation polymeriza… Show more

“…MB concentration of the supernatant was determined by measuring the UV–vis absorbance and calculated based on a working curve. The amount of the adsorbed MB at equilibration state ( q e , mg g −1 ) was calculated by the following equation: [ 36 ] qe=C0CeVm where C 0 (mg L −1 ) is the initial MB concentration, and C e (mg L −1 ) is the MB concentration at equilibration state. m (g) is the mass of PolyHIPE‐Na + and V (L) is the volume of MB aqueous solution.…”

“…Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models applied for the present study are, respectively, expressed in the following equations: [ 36 ] Ceqe=Ceqm +1KLqm lnqe=lnKf +1nlnCe where q m and K L are Langmuir constants related to maximum adsorption capacity and binding energy, respectively; K f (L mg −1 ) and n are empirical constants that indicate the Freundlich constant and heterogeneity factor, respectively.…”

“…Stimuli-responsive hollow particles, especially hollow micro-sized or nano-sized spheres, continue to attract major interest because they have wide potential applications in fields such as dye precipitation [1], catalysis [2,3], sensors [4][5][6], and especially controlled delivery systems [7][8][9][10]. Early studies on hollow polymeric microspheres were conducted by Caruso et al [11].…”
