Biomass estimation of cultivated red algae Pyropia using unmanned aerial platform based multispectral imaging

Abstract: Background Pyropia is an economically advantageous genus of red macroalgae, which has been cultivated in the coastal areas of East Asia for over 300 years. Realizing estimation of macroalgae biomass in a high-throughput way would great benefit their cultivation management and research on breeding and phenomics. However, the conventional method is labour-intensive, time-consuming, manually destructive, and prone to human error. Nowadays, high-throughput phenotyping using unmanned aerial vehicle … Show more

“…Song and Park (2020) did not see the significant change of NDRE when aquatic plants had proliferated. However, Che et al (2021) proved that the strong and positive correlations existed between Pyropia yezoensis (a type of red macroalgae) biomass and NDRE. Therefore, blue‐to‐green reflectance ratio is deemed as the best‐fit model predictor of Chl‐ a for the Campus Lake (Figure 6b).…”

“…Yu et al [244], Choudhury et al [245], Che et al [246], Choudhury et al [247], Baath et al [248], Cooper et al [249], and Vahtmäe et al [250] tested the fusion of hyperspectral and multispectral data, which are collected by different sensors, to further achieve high-spatialand spectral-resolution images. Thus, the best solution for the highly accurate estimation of AGB is the fusion of SAR Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-1 imagery, and it was reported that this fusion generated a significant trend for the estimation of the AGB [245,246]. However, studies on the fusion of ALOS-2, PALSAR-2, and Sentinel-2A data for estimating AGB are not yet fully established.…”

“…This research determined a correlation of 0.636 between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) calculated with an NIR hyperspectral spectrometer and a thermatic mapper from a satellite. In [ 99 ], researchers indicated that UAV based hyperspectral imaging can be used for the biomass estimation of Pyropia (a type of alga) and serves as a cost effective solution for offshore algae monitoring. Disease management Manual or autonomous field scouting is a convenient method of disease detection.…”
