A Review of Biomass Briquette Binders and Quality Parameters

The adverse effect of the use of fossil fuels on the environment and public health has given rise to a sustained renewable energy research and development. An important component of global renewable energy mix is the use of loose biomass, including agricultural and forestry residues, to produce solid fuels in the form of briquettes. Briquettes play a significant role in bioenergy mix in developing and developed countries. The production of biomass briquettes often entails the collection, transportation, storage, processing, and compaction of loose biomass that meet specific quality parameters. The densification process often involves the addition of binders to improve the cohesive strength of the briquette material. This paper surveys recent literature from 2012 to 2021 to establish the current state of research on the use of binders in briquette production; and reviews current parameters used in assessing the quality of biomass briquettes with focus on mechanical and handling properties. While a number of quality parameters were identified, their assessment methodologies varied widely in the literature, thus necessitating standardization for comparability purposes. The review also includes factors affecting the wide production and adoption of biomass briquettes in most developing economies and proposes ways of overcoming the bottlenecks.

This present work focused on investigating the thermal behavior and emission level of sapodilla oil mixed with diesel to an internal combustion (IC) engine. The behavior of the engine is measured via brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake-specific energy consumption (BSEC), heat release rate (HRR), cylinder pressure, and cumulative heat release rate (CHRR). The test results were evaluated with diesel fuel. Carbon deposits were low in sapodilla seed oil with slight variation of calorific value than standard diesel fuel. BTE value for case B20 is found to equal diesel fuel. For lower and higher blends, the cylinder pressures are lower than the diesel fuel. HRR decreased as increased of the blend ratio. Inferior blends of sapodilla are emitted lower HC and CO. The BTE of B100 works 88.13% efficiently, similar to diesel for low load conditions. When compared to diesel, a maximum NOx reduction of up to 30% was achieved while using the sapodilla blend. It is found that the oil derived from the sapodilla seed kernels will be the promising additive for fossil fuels for a greener environment.

Biomass has a large share in the energy generation matrix, due to the regional economic benefits. This work has as main objective to evaluate the parameters used in the manufacture of briquettes produced with forest residues and the economic engineering for the manufacturer. The forest residues were: wood chips and chips of Eucalyptus spp. and barks of Pinus taeda. The evaluations were the chemical characterization of forest residues and the costs involved in the briquetting process. The forest residues presented extractive chemical composition and lignin. The production costs of the briquettes were affected mainly by the equipment, being the Pinus taeda barks the one that presented higher production cost. However, the production costs obtained in this study are approximately 20% lower than the production costs using traditional methods for forest firewood. The energy value from biomass allows the reduction of the dependence of energy, which can be used for the generation of steam or electricity, for subsistence. A fact for energy conversion is to evaluate the material moisture. It is suitable to burn residues with moisture between 45 to 55%. The consumed electric energy is important to evaluate the total costs. The energy required depends on the quality of raw material and the system employed. Forest residues is an important source for eco firewood production, contributing to energy generation and decreasing of the solid waste stored at the company. In this way, the new parameters for briquetting biomass forest wastes shown in this work, which is an important stage of the process, make economically viable and environmentally suitable the eco firewood production.
