This paper studies the use of biomass syngas, obtained from pyrolysis or gasification, in traditional energy-production systems, specifically internal combustion (IC) engines and combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants. The biomass conversion stage has been simulated by means of a gas–solid thermodynamic model. The IC and CCGT plant configurations were optimised to maximise heat and power production. Several types of biomass feedstock were studied to assess their potential for energy production and their effect on the environment. This system was also compared with the coupling between biomass gasification and fuel cells

-Coal and biomass are energy sources with great potential for use in Brazil. Coal-biomass cogasification enables the combination of the positive characteristics of each fuel, besides leading to a cleaner use of coal. The present study evaluates the potential of co-gasification of binary coal-biomass blends using sources widely available in Brazil. This analysis employs computational simulations using a reliable thermodynamic equilibrium model. Favorable operational conditions at high temperatures are determined in order to obtain gaseous products suitable for energy cogeneration and chemical synthesis. This study shows that blends with biomass ratios of 5% and equivalence ratios ≤ 0.3 lead to high cold gas efficiencies. Suitable gaseous products for chemical synthesis were identified at biomass ratios ≤ 35% and moisture contents ≥ 40%. Formation of undesirable nitrogen and sulfur compounds was also analyzed.

Thermochemical liquefaction characteristics of sawdust were explored with ethanol as solvent and [BMIM]Cl-NiCl 2 as catalyst. The influences of liquefaction parameters including reaction temperature, residence time and hydrogen initial pressure on the sawdust conversion and products distribution were studied. The maximum bio-oil yield of 75.45 % and conversion of 86.01 % were obtained in ethanol at 320°C and 30 min under 10 MPa hydrogen pressure. The chemical composition of bio-oil and gaseous products derived from optimized conditions was analyzed via GC-MS and GC. These results showed that the dominant compounds of light oil were carboxylic acid, esters and phenol and its derivatives. In addition, the gaseous components consisted of CO 2 , CO, methane, ethane and ethene.
