Biomarkers of oxidant stress, insulin sensitivity and endothelial activation in rheumatoid arthritis: a cross-sectional study of their association with accelerated atherosclerosis

Abstract: Background: Women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have increased morbidity and mortality due to coronary heart disease. Chronic systemic inflammation is known to accelerate atherosclerosis and increase arterial stiffness in patients, but other mechanisms may also be involved. Biomarkers of oxidant stress, inflammation, insulinaemia and endothelial dysfunction were measured in blood and urine from 46 RA patients and 48 age-matched controls. Plaque formation and intima-medial thickness (IMT) were measured using B… Show more

“…In another study, 46 RA patients with an average disease duration of 12 years had significantly increased levels of sVCAM and sEsel compared with healthy controls ( P = 0·029 and P < 0·001 respectively). Levels of sVCAM in this study correlated with intima media thickness (IMT) (r = 0·37, P = 0·012) [24]. These studies indicate that endothelial cell activation is present in RA.…”

“…Therefore, the inflammatory character of RA can explain the observed low selenium levels in the serum of patients with the disease. In a similar study, Pemberton et al [22] recently reported low levels of blood selenium in 46 RA patients. Köse et al [23] reported that plasma Se levels in 60 patients were lower than those of 60 healthy controls.…”

“…However, there were studies reporting non-significant association [19][20][21] while others supported an inverse association between selenium levels and hypertension [6,22,23]. In a cross-sectional study on 722 males with mean age 54 years old in eastern Finland higher selenium level was found to be associated with lower hypertension rate [6].…”
