Biomarkers of Chondrocyte Apoptosis and Autophagy in Osteoarthritis

Abstract: Cell death with morphological and molecular features of apoptosis has been detected in osteoarthritic (OA) cartilage, which suggests a key role for chondrocyte death/survival in the pathogenesis of OA. Identification of biomarkers of chondrocyte apoptosis may facilitate the development of novel therapies that may eliminate the cause or, at least, slow down the degenerative processes in OA. The aim of this review was to explore the molecular markers and signals that induce chondrocyte apoptosis in OA. A literat… Show more

“…The chondro-protective effect of ART might be associated with its role in the prevention of chondrocyte apoptosis. Accumulating evidence suggests that chondrocyte apoptosis plays an important role in the development and progression of OA [38, 39]. During the repair process, the apoptotic cells represented by an increased survival of chondrocytes might be a protection mechanism.…”

“…4 Furthermore, in degenerative cartilage, there is evidence of cell death in chondrocytes, which will enhance the degenerative course. 5 Due to the limited regenerative ability of articular cartilage, OA is one of the most challenging joint diseases. Current pharmacologic treatments include analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).…”

“…Apoptosis has been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of many pathological conditions [6771]. For instance, apoptosis of chondrocytes has been shown to cause degenerative processes in articular cartilage osteoarthritis [67,68].…”
