Biomarkers in Psychiatry: Concept, Definition, Types and Relevance to the Clinical Reality

Abstract: During the last years, an extraordinary effort has been made to identify biomarkers as potential tools for improving prevention, diagnosis, drug response and drug development in psychiatric disorders. Contrary to other diseases, mental illnesses are classified by diagnostic categories with a broad variety list of symptoms. Consequently, patients diagnosed from the same psychiatric illness present a great heterogeneity in their clinical presentation. This fact together with the incomplete knowledge of the neuro… Show more

“…To serve as an accurate biomarker, the analyte of interest should play roles in normal biological processes and should indicate the progression of disease and responses to treatment. Biomarkers can be categorized according to their purposes, including those that screen for disease, indicate prognosis markers, indicate the efficacy of treatment, and determine toxicity [ 6 , 7 ]. Genetic biomarkers are the most actively researched target biomarkers, with cancer being the most researched target disease.…”

“…Based on their specific clinical applications, biomarkers can be classified into different categories (Box 2). An effective biomarker should be clinically relevant and detectable, dynamically reflect disease progression, and have high reproducibility and signal-to-noise ratio [17].…”

“…This 3MDR study, one of the first international studies of its kind, will investigate whether 3MDR reduces symptoms of combat-related TR-PTSD. This 3MDR study protocol has roots in previous 3MDR studies from Canada, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom [ 25 , 40 , 48 , 66 ]. Ideally, the combined international efforts of multiple research teams could lead to a meta-analysis of 3MDR in the military and veteran populations.…”

“…This study will also address the possible effect of 3MDR on the constructs of moral injury and resilience. Further, as examination of relationships of psychological and biological factors to effective PTSD treatment has become critically important in attempts to understand the pathogenesis of TR-PTSD and to identify novel therapeutic targets [ 48 - 50 ], biomarker measurements and machine learning will be employed. Classifying neuropsychiatric disorders on the basis of objective and practical biomarkers aims to inform the diagnosis and selection of therapeutic approaches [ 51 - 54 ].…”
